Distance
Greg Sanders, better known as founding dubstep artist Distance, is finally receiving the attention he deserves. Along with Skream, Mala, Jamie Vex’d, and a few others, he is one of the core group of DJs and producers who can be credited with forming the nucleus of the dubstep genre that has spread from London to the outer reaches of the globe today. He has created many classics within the movement, utilizing a keen ear for Middle Eastern percussion and melodies whilst retaining dubstep’s 140 beats per minute and penchant for sub-bass, and adding a dash of heavy metal synth riffage to the mix to top it all off. Early staples such as Hotflush’s “Nomad” to Tectonic’s “Temptation” (see below, one of my favorites), on through his two LPs for Planet Mu in 2007 and 2008 and a slew of sternum-crunching releases for his own Chestplate imprint, have all made an indelible mark on modern dance music as we know it.
Distance - Temptation by www.thekort.com
The top track is off of the dBridge-owned Exit Records’ recent compilation, entitled Mosaic Volume 1, which features 22 originals from new and established artists in an excellent mission statement of deep, icy, high-tempo bass music. “Fading” is as beautiful a song as any Sanders has ever done, and fast on its heels was the announcement of his record deal with major distributor Island Records. “Falling”, featuring vocalist Alys Be, is set to be released in the coming month and really is a breath of fresh air for mainstream dubstep, lacking in the pre-pubescent mid-range abuse of most popular dubstep and emphasing what made the genre popular in the first place- emotive and melodic sub-bass.
Congrats to one of modern bass music’s pioneers, and if you aren’t familar with his back catalogue, we here at the Kort highly recommend his two LPs, My Demons (featuring standouts Night Vision and Traffic) and the criminally overlooked Repercussions, as ideal starting points with which to explore the Distance sound. Check this recent interview with Knowledge Magazine (and hear “Falling”), his discography, and before we leave you for a messy Saturday eve with Salem, be sure to meditate on “Out of Mind” below, the 3rd track off of Repercussions. (bass for your face, London!)
